The company is made up of professionals that all have a passion for acting. Each year the cast put their professional careers on hold to embrace the delights of the Edinburgh Festival and Yorkshire performances. The cast ranges from toddlers to 70 year olds!

Year in year out at the festival Livewire have successfully sold-out performances, achieved 5* reviews and taken home awards.

2017 reviews:
"The performers enthral the audience [...] I am sold as far as Livewire Theatre goes – and will definitely keep an eye out for their 16th year."

****  Fringe Guru

"Livewire Theatre invariably brings something new to every play they stage; whether it's an exploration of vying themes of feminism and patriarchy in the Iliad, or using Oliver Twist to portray the horrors of the holocaust, their work is layered with subtext and thematic nuance. […] [The cast] entertain wonderfully for the full 90 minutes of stage time."

Our Director

WRITER, DIRECTOR, LEGEND

Mary Tate founded Livewire Theatre in 1999, after becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of access to theatrical training for young people.

Mary has over 40 years of experience as a theatre director and writer. She has written dozens of plays that have been performed across the country, including London and Edinburgh. Her work has received impressive reviews and awards.

Her awards include Derek Award Winner Oliver Twisted (Dickens classic re-imagined in 1940 Berlin), The Romanovs, and a rip roaring version of Twelfth Night set in 1980's Costa de Sol.

As well as directing and writing Mary also works as a partner in a property development company based in North Yorkshire.
